- Google Transforms into Microsoft of Old. Another “Google =? Microsoft” comparison, this one by MSFT employee Dare Obasanjo. Interesting and I haven’t fully thought about it. Though in general I find myself disagreeing with Dare.
- MozRepl. REPL for Mozilla. Useful for mozilla/add-on development. Maybe scripting against your live browser, but curl & friends seem better for most cases.
- Reddit comments on “Why can only root listen to ports below 1024″. Surprisingly everyone–it appears even the original author–has reached the conclusion that there are very easy workarounds for the 1024 limit while preserving the security that 1024 grants (DOS for built-in services). Everyone also seems to agree that Unix needs a security model upgrade. All in all, a good example of a blog post stimulating a good conversation (instead of becoming a technology pissing match, though there is a bit of “why not use this difficult manly solution? What are you, some sort of sissy GUI boy?”).
- The War on the Unexpected. Bruce Schneier is such a smart guy. Also check out Beyond Fear. My favorite part:
…politicians need to stop praising and promoting the officers who get it wrong. And everyone needs to stop castigating, and prosecuting, the victims just because they embarrassed the police by their innocence.
